Dharma Talk with Sensei Shinzan Palma and Sensei Joshin Byrnes

Wednesday May 29 Sensei Shinzan Palma and Sensei Joshin Byrnes will give a Dharma Talk.

Sensei José Shinzan Palma

Sensei Shinzan was born in Veracruz, Mexico, He is an ordained Zen priest and Dharma successor of Joan Jiko Halifax, roshi. In 1996 in Mexico City, he met Korean Zen teacher, Ven. Samu Sunim and trained in the Buddhist Maitreya Seminar while living in the Toronto Zen Buddhist Temple until 2005. He was ordained as a Zen Buddhist priest by Ven. Samu Sunim in 2004 .

Shinzan arrived at Upaya Zen Center in 2006 where he lived and trained for over 8 years as a resident and student of Joan Halifax, roshi. He received Dharma transmission from Joan Halifax, roshi in Jan 2015 before relocating to San Diego, CA..

He is the founder of the 4 vows Sangha in San Diego ,CA. co-teaches teen retreats in the US for IBME , and is a guest teacher at  Upaya Zen Center in New Mexico, Einin-ji in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, and High Meadow Farm, New Hampshire.

His vision is to continue to mentor and teach young men and women and to create a Zen Hispanic community in the USA and Mexico.

Sensei Joshin Byrnes

Sensei Joshin is a Zen priest and teacher in the White Plum lineage of Maezumi Roshi and Bernie Glassman Roshi and is a dharma successor of Roshi Joan Halifax at Upaya Zen Center. He served at Upaya as the president and vice abbot until founding Bread Loaf Mountain Zen Community.

Joshin founded Bread Loaf Mountain Zen Community to create a hub of socially engaged Zen practice of contemplation and action born of the Zen Peacemaker practice of Bearing Witness. Professionally, Joshin has spent much of his career working for social change nonprofits in the areas of AIDS and HIV prevention, child welfare, and community based philanthropy. He is currently the director of Upaya’s Chaplaincy Training Program and serves as a core faculty member, focusing on systems thinking and systems leadership.

Joshin is partnered with Bernie Schlager, and together they have three children and many grandchildren, which are a great joy.
